Is It Better to Buy a 3-Way Fridge Freezer or a Separate Chest Freezer and Fridge?

Spending a long holiday in your caravan is the best way to have a memorable time with your family and friends. But a holiday without cold beverages and fresh food is certainly not the most enjoyable one. For that, you need a good caravan fridge that can keep your beverages cold and food fresh for long periods of time. However, when you are trying to buy a fridge for your caravan, you might find yourself in a state of confusion because of the sheer variety in the market.

You may have also heard that instead of buying a 3-way fridge-freezer, you can get the two as separate appliances. To eliminate the dilemma of choice, it is better to learn the differences between a 3-way fridge, chest freezer, and a compressor fridge. Understanding the difference between the three of them is also important because they have to suit all types of your camping needs and be efficient with the power consumption.

3-Way Fridge Freezer: 3-way fridges are the most versatile fridges available in the market for camping and other purposes. They can be operated through various types of power sources such as 12-volt DC (car battery), 240-volt AC (mains power or generator power source), and LPG gas bottle. Their versatility makes them a favourite for most of the caravan owners. It assures that they can be used both for long and short holidays with different power sources. They offer sufficient cooling with amazing energy efficiency, particularly when running on gas.

Compressor Fridge: Compressor fridges or 2 way fridges are conventional fridges that provide better cooling than the 3-way fridges because of the dedicated cooling compressor. However, they do not offer the ability to run on gas. To use them, you need to either run them from a 12/24 volt battery souce, or a 240 volt mains power or generator source. They are more popular for travelers who spend more time in hotter environments, as they perform better in higher ambient temperatures than the 3-way freezers.

Chest Freezer: Chest freezers are designed for bulk cold storage. They are highly efficient and are also well insulated, keeping most of the cold air inside the compartment. They can often occupy more space than a 3-way fridge or a compressor fridge and can also consume more energy. Chest freezers are popular for keen fishermen who like to freeze their catch. As a traveler, you will likely need a fridge in addition to your chest freezer and therefore have additional batteries to power them up.

Having a clear understanding of which type of fridge is good for your caravan or RV is important before choosing an option. Among all the three, the 3-way fridges and compressor fridges are the most common as they are lightweight, space-savvy, portable, and energy efficient.
